Smoke and Wildfire
Activated carbon adsorbs smoke odor. HEPA filtration captures fine smoke particles.
Activated carbon adsorbs smoke odor. HEPA filtration captures fine smoke particles.
The smoke is not yours and it is in your bedroom anyway.
It comes through the wall at eleven at night, or over the ridge for six weeks a year. The source is not yours to switch off. All you control is how many pounds of carbon stand between it and the room you sleep in.
How to choose on this shelf
- Room size. Airpura publishes 1,000 sq ft for the Airpura T400 and 2,000 for the Airpura T600. Austin Air publishes none and says why, so we will not quote one.
- Carbon weight, because a source that never stops eats it. Austin Air HealthMate Plus carries up to 15 lb. Airpura T600 carries 26 lb. AllerAir sizes the Smoke Eater bed to the cabinet.
- The tar trap is the one spec that separates these from every other model. Tobacco and cigar smoke leaves a sticky residue that clogs carbon early, so the AllerAir AirMedic Pro 5 HDS Smoke Eater puts a sacrificial layer in front.
Not for: sealing a room. A machine reduces what is in the air, it does not stop smoke arriving. Austin Air says in its own manual that a high smoke load means replacing the filter sooner.

How to choose in four steps
-
1. Room size
Measure the room, then match the sq ft
Length times width. Match that to the sq ft in the product name. Go one size up for open plan rooms or high ceilings.
Under 400 sq ft: bedroom or office. 400 to 999: living room. 1000 plus: a whole floor.
-
2. The concern
Match the filter to the problem
Allergies, dust and pet dander call for HEPA. Smoke, cooking and chemical smells call for a real bed of activated carbon. For mold and mildew, look at the HEPA air scrubbers, some add UV on top.
Use the What it is for filter to narrow the list.
-
3. Noise
Bedrooms want under 25 dB on low
The lowest speed is the one that runs all night. The quietest unit here starts at 16.5 dB on its lowest speed. Air scrubbers built for job sites run over 60 dB on high and belong in a basement or garage.
The Noise filter uses the lowest speed figure the maker publishes, or its only published figure where that is all it gives.
-
4. Running cost
Check the filter price and how often it changes
A cheaper unit with a filter every 6 months can cost more over 3 years than a pricier one changed once a year.
Where the maker publishes them, the product page shows the filter price and change interval.
